Description

J. Lohr, Merlot Los Osos Paso Robles, .375L

The J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot is medium-dark in color with a mature red hue. Varietal aromas of black plum and violet meld with a barrel signature of hazelnut and brown baking spices, while the generous fraction of Malbec in the blend accentuates bright fruit tones and contributes a note of hibiscus flower. Firm tannins and lively acidity cascade to a lengthy red-fruit finish.

The movie gave Sideways gave merlot a bad name and actually slowed the growth of sales. But if you are looking for something a little heavier than a pinot, but not as heavy as a cab, this merlot is your answer. Produced in Paso Robles, it has the similar character to the wines of that region. Fruit forward, full-bodied, but smooth.

Winemaker

In the late 1960s, Jerry Lohr began an extensive investigation of California grape growing regions – searching for the ideal location for his first vineyard. Jerry was raised on a South Dakota farm; his agricultural roots armed him with an innate sense of the relationship between climate, soil, and location. His research and instincts led him to the Central Coast, an area just beginning to explore its potential for winegrowing.

Four decades ago, the California Central Coast had not yet emerged as one of North America’s world-class winegrowing regions. With little history or viticultural precedent, planting on the Central Coast was a gamble. One of a handful of early pioneers, Jerry Lohr was among the first to realize the inherent potential of Monterey and Paso Robles for producing high-quality grapes and superb wines.
