If you haven’t tried Mencia, now is your opportunity! This wine is from Spain totally luscious in texture and finish. Medium body, mellow tannin. Mencia is a Lovely medium to full red, fuller than pinot the perfect combination of pinot noir & petite syrah. I really love the Mencia grape.
Winemaker
The cellars are situated at Finca Losada, opposite Castro de la Ventosa, and were designed by Jesús Manzanares, the architect of the Artadi, Aalto, and Clos d’Agon wineries. The area has historical and archaeological significance, being the birthplace of the Bierzo. An ancient winding stone wall, representing the original boundaries of the area and currently undergoing restoration and consolidation work, served as the inspiration for the design of the winery’s building, which appears to rise out of the land and also merges into it at the same time.
The particular design and layout of the winery’s building allow light to enter important areas, such as the tasting room and lookout point, whilst the wine production areas remain hidden underground. The winding wall in front of the access road is a modern expression of the Castro de la Ventosa and a tribute to a part of Bierzo’s history.
The architectural design has also catered for specific requirements in the wine-making process, one such example being the gentle movement of grapes and wine by gravity rather than with the force of mechanical pumps. The underground part of the winery where the vinification and aging in barrels and bottles take place is the ideal environment for wine-making and keeps energy consumption down to a minimum, contributing to our efforts to protect the natural environment. Solar panels are also used to supply energy for the wine-making process.
